Hernandia bivalvis is described as a "dicot" in the Hernandiaceae family.
In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Near Threatened. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.
In the Fraser Coast region it appears to be restricted to the south-west in the vicinity of Mount Urah and Malarga. Recorded outside of the Fraser Coast region just west of Biggenden and elswhere from north Queensland south to the NSW border.
It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
