Species information

Portulaca oleracea     L.

This introduced groundcover is commonly known as pigweed.

Portulaca oleracea is described as a "dicot" in the Portulacaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Also known as common purslane. An edible food plant with native varieties also present in inland Australia (http://australianportulaca.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/some-surprises-in-portulaca-oleracea.html). 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
