Species information

Pseudovanilla foliata     (F.Muell.) Garay

This native vine or climber is commonly known as giant climbing orchid.

Pseudovanilla foliata is described as a "monocot" in the Orchidaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Least Concern. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

A large climbing, scrambing, leafless saprophytic plant with stems 8 metres long with small 3-4cm round leaf-like bracts. Flowering stems 20-40cm long with 1-8 3-4cm diameter orange or orange-yellow flowers with a dark reddish labellum. Flowering period November-January. Rare in area. K'gari (Fraser Island). (Alan Logan). Listed as a special least concern species in Queensland (https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/plants-animals/plants/protected-plants/harvesting). 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
