Species information

Phaius australis     (Banks ex L'Her.) Blume

This native groundcover is commonly known as common swamp orchid.

Phaius australis is described as a "monocot" in the Orchidaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Endangered. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is classified as Endangered.

A large, clumping plant with 4-6 60-180cm long X 6-8cm wide green pleated leaves. Flower stem stout 80-120cm high with 7-18 6-8cm diameter brownish flowers. Flowering period September-October. Rare in area due to illegal collecting. K'gari (Fraser Island); Dundowran (where now extinct). (Alan Logan). Elsewhere found from Cairns in the north to Yamba in New South Wales. ‘Back on Track’ critical priority plant species for the Burnett Mary NRM region. Regarded as a wetland species in Queensland WetlandInfo.

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
