Previously known as Sonchus megalocarpus (Australian Plant Census). In Fraser Coast region recorded only on K'gari (Fraser Island). Coastal species from Bundaberg south to Tasmania and then west to Perth area.
It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
