Species information

Bruguiera gymnorhiza     (L.) Savigny

This native tree is commonly known as large-fruited orange mangrove.

Bruguiera gymnorhiza is described as a "dicot" in the Rhizophoraceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Least Concern. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Also known locally as the knobbly knee mangrove. Old trees develop knee roots which grow upward from the underground root system and allow the exchange of gases in oxygen-poor sediments. The knee roots can extend in a radius of approximately 10 meters around the trunk and can reach a height of up to 60cm (http://www.mangrove.at/bruguiera-gymnorhiza_large_leafed-orange-mangrove.html).  Regarded as a wetland species in Queensland WetlandInfo.

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.

Reported at 13 Fraser Coast localities: Beaver Rock, Granville, Great Sandy Strait, Maryborough, Pacific Haven, Pialba, Point Vernon, Poona, River Heads, Tandora, Tinnanbar, Tuan, Tuan Forest.
