Species information

Sansevieria trifasciata var. trifasciata   Prain WEED

This introduced groundcover is commonly known as mother-in-law's tongue.

Sansevieria trifasciata var. trifasciata is described as a "monocot" in the Dracaenaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Listed as an invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014 but not prohibited or restricted. As at 28/02/2026 declared as a Local Law Pest Plant for the Fraser Coast region for K'gari (Fraser Island) area and listed as a non-declared environmental weed elsewhere in the Fraser Coast region. In the Australian Plant Census and Plants of the World Online known as Dracaena trifasciata. 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in the Atlas of Living Australia.

Reported at 15 Fraser Coast localities: Dundathu, Point Vernon, Toogoom, Urangan, Urraween, Dundowran Beach, Craignish, River Heads, Teddington, Magnolia, Tinana, Maryborough, Beaver Rock, K'gari, Tiaro.
