Species information

Duranta erecta     L.

This introduced shrub is commonly known as pigeon berry.

Duranta erecta is described as a "dicot" in the Verbenaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Previously known as Duranta repens (Australian Plant Census). An invasive weed with sharp spines. A garden escapee which is spread by birds which eat the fruit and dumping of pruned branches. Listed as an invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014 but not prohibited or restricted. 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.

Reported at 18 Fraser Coast localities: Bauple, Beaver Rock, Craignish, Dundowran Beach, Glenwood, Granville, Howard, Kawungan, Magnolia, Maryborough, Point Vernon, Talegalla Weir, Tiaro, Tinana, Tinana South, Urangan, Walligan, Yengarie.
