Species information

Caleana major     R.Br.

This native groundcover is commonly known as flying duck orchid.

Caleana major is described as a "monocot" in the Orchidaceae family.

Flagged as a potential locally significant species in the Fraser Coast Region. In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is classified as Least Concern. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Uncommon in the Fraser Coast region recorded on K'gari (Fraser Island) and Burrum Heads. Also reported at Maaroom (Poona National Park) and Tinnanbar (Alan Logan). A small, spindly plant with a single 4-6cm long lanceolate leaf at ground level; usually reddish in colour. Flowering stem 15-25cm high with 1-2 dark reddish brown 3cm high flowers. Flowering period August-September. Flowering Tinnanbar October 2016. An iconic ground orchid in the region. Listed as a special least concern species in Queensland (https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/plants-animals/plants/protected-plants/harvesting). 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
