Species information

Sporobolus natalensis     (Steud.) T.Durand & Schinz

This introduced groundcover is commonly known as giant rat's tail grass.

Sporobolus natalensis is described as a "monocot" in the Poaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Difficult to separate from Sporobolus pyramidalis. See Assessment of Invasive Naturalised Plants in Southeast Queensland G.N. Batianoff and D.W. Butler, Queensland Herbarium 16/8/01. A category 3 restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.
