Species information

Sporobolus pyramidalis     P.Beauv.

This introduced groundcover is commonly known as giant rat's tail grass.

Sporobolus pyramidalis is described as a "monocot" in the Poaceae family.

In the Queensland Nature Conservation Act it is not classified as it is not native to Queensland. Under the Federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act it is not classified.

Difficult to separate from Sporobolus natalensis. See Assessment of Invasive Naturalised Plants in Southeast Queensland G.N. Batianoff and D.W. Butler, Queensland Herbarium 16/8/01. A category 3 restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. 

It has been recorded in the Wide Bay district in the Queensland Herbarium Census and is listed as occurring in the Fraser Coast region in Queensland Herbarium Wildlife Online.

Reported at 10 Fraser Coast localities: Bauple Forest, Boonooroo Plains, Kawungan, Pialba, Point Vernon, St Mary, Sunshine Acres, Toogoom, Tuan Forest, Walligan.
